A former flower shop owner in Keller, RE/MAX Preferred Properties Associate Rhonda Thompson joined RE/MAX in 2005. Naturally adept at selling, Rhonda turned a house flipping hobby into a career “I’ve been in some aspect of selling most of my life,” she says. “I love people and love homes so I thought ‘why not earn a commission while doing what you love’.” Rhonda set out to do just that, earning her license in 2000 and relocating to Decatur in Wise County.
“One of the challenges when just starting out is getting to know your market area,” says Rhonda, who first joined a local Coldwell Banker office. “But I fell into a rhythm pretty fast. I did $1 million in transactions and without even working the whole year.” After several years, Rhonda felt more hindered than helped at her office, saying that she wanted to earn money for herself instead of for the company. “I kept getting slapped down on my commission and no matter how well I did it felt like I was repeatedly starting over,” she continues. “I said ‘this is for the birds!’ and went elsewhere.”
Luckily, RE/MAX Preferred Properties Owner Marilyn Read had already contacted Rhonda for recruiting, explaining RE/MAX and the maximum commission model. Rhonda jumped aboard. “I was ready to do it. I was at a point in my career where I felt ready to really be in charge of my career.” Rhonda has earned a production club award every year she has been with RE/MAX, but she isn’t done yet. She’s looking ahead to expanding her business into Farm and Ranch. “In Wise County, you have to be a jack of all trades and do a bit of everything,” she says. “This is something else I enjoy about real estate. It’s never dull.”
With two boys at home, Dustin (16) and Dylan (11), Rhonda is kept busy outside the office with everything from hiking and four wheeling to basketball coaching and youth group missions. However, she maintains her keys to success come from commitment and time management. “You’ve got to be Johnny-on-the-spot in this business, don’t procrastinate and stay on top of things. When people feel they can trust you, you’ve got it made,” she says. “I also pray and thank God everyday.”
