In 1996, native Texans Rick and Pryor Cheney were empty nesters living near Silver City, New Mexico. After years of running a successful business as professional hunting guides, the two decided to relocate back to Texas where Rick’s sister was a Realtor. “She was always bragging about the opportunities in Texas. Since we had family out there we decided to make the move,” Rick remembers. They moved to Kerrville and went back to real estate (they had both been licensed in the early 80’s).

It was a challenge setting up a business in a town where they didn’t know anyone, but they found ways of getting their name out there. Rick worked at the office on days other agents didn’t want and advertized at somewhat unusual places. “We were probably the first Realtors to go to the Texas Trophy Hunters Hunting Show and set up a real estate booth,” says Pryor. After a venture as office owners, the two moved their business to RE/MAX Kerrville in 2003. “We’d been interested in opening a RE/MAX Franchise ourselves with my sister, but it never came together,” says Rick. “When Becky [McFadden] and Kitty [Cowden] opened    RE/MAX Kerrville, we knew we wanted to be part of it. It’s a place with a great reputation, great support and a great referral system.”

Rick and Pryor remain independent agents at     RE/MAX Kerrville, despite their enormous symmetry as a team. Married for nearly 44 years, the two often help each other in their individual transactions. “Rick handles mostly Farm and Ranch and I focus mainly on residential,” says Pryor. “We’ve worked together in every business we’ve been in and naturally complement each other.” This complement is added to the couple’s philosophy of success, which can be broken down to the golden rule. “We treat the client how we would want to be treated,” says Rick. “Every client is equal, each is just as important as the other. There is a property for every client and we don’t mind working hard to find it for them.”

The two have no thoughts of retiring soon, saying they enjoy real estate too much. “I love being around people. People are interesting,” says Rick. “I love studying the land and finding out what it needs to prosper.” As for Pryor, she enjoys the challenge real estate offers and the chance to communicate. “Getting to listen to your client and hear what they are saying is what this business is all about.”
