Growing up with a father who was also developer, Lisa Strickland already had a fondness for real estate when she went to college in Austin while she was in college. Working as a Realtor’s assistant while she earned her degree, she decided a career in real estate was for her and became licensed six months later, returning to her home town of Corpus Christi after graduation to set up business. She has been working there for the last 30 years.
In 1996, having done everything from owning her own company to working under other brokers, she made the leap to RE/MAX, “I’m very independent and I enjoy the freedom to conduct my business on my own terms,” says Lisa, who enjoys being out and about in the community with her clients. “People, interaction and showing homes are what drive me in this business. With RE/MAX, I feel like my own boss, but without all the problems of actually owning an office.”
Lisa is fortunate to conduct her business in a market of steady growth. The recreational lure of Corpus Christi brings a steady stream of new and returning residents to the area. “We have a lot of people drawn to the coast and the water here. It is a great summer getaway for Texans, as it is cooler here than in other popular destinations,” Lisa says. “We are also removed enough from the cities that traffic is minimal.” The stability of the market in Corpus Christi is compounded by its resistance to market change. “Our growth is slow but progressive, and when there is a turn in the market, our growth doesn’t plunge. So things stay fairly stable here.”
An aggressive professional, Lisa earned her Broker’s license in the early part of her career and continues to increase the scope of her business. “I could work 24 hours a day if I let myself. But I’ve learned to be judicious with my time,” she says. “One of the best things we have in real estate is the mandatory education. Successful Realtors need to stay on top of market trends and never stop learning. You will learn something new about this business if you put your mind to it.”
Having been in business since 1975, there is much Lisa can pass on to the next generation of RE/MAX agents; most especially lessons of fortitude. “Keep at it. This business can be hard, but develop your own techniques and find what works for you,” Lisa advises. “I have always valued honesty as the best business practice you can have. Always tell your client the truth, good or bad. You may lose a sale, but you will gain five.”
