Originally from Beaumont, Michael moved to Houston in 1976 and entered real estate after working for a small Bellaire builder for several years. “When that company shut down a natural progression brought me to residential sales,” says Michael. After earning his license in 1997, Michael went to work for a small Bellaire boutique Real Estate company. The owner of the company liked what she saw in Michael and asked him to work directly for her as an assistant. He agreed, knowing he needed time to build up a client base. She became his first mentor, teaching him contracts and negotiations. “I feel very fortunate that I was able to get in with a seasoned agent from the very beginning. That helped me to eventually transition to RE/MAX.”
When Michael felt he had gone as far as he could at that company, he started interviewing at several franchise offices. When he met and spoke with Broker Keith Burrhus of RE/MAX Town & Country, something clicked. “I felt a connection and found the RE/MAX system aligned with my needs and desires in terms of global brand recognition,” says Michael. “I haven’t met a person yet who doesn’t know RE/MAX. When they hear that name, they know immediately that not only are you affiliated with a worldwide company, but one of the best companies in real estate, and that was important to me.”
In joining RE/MAX Town & Country (now RE/MAX Memorial Town & Country), Michael combined his basic knowledge of real estate with individual agent freedom and RE/MAX resources. Keith has since become his good friend and his second mentor. His career has continued to flourish, earning him production awards for the last three years. Already holding his GRI designation, Michael is one course away from attaining his CRS designation. He is also working on his Broker’s License, though he has no plans to open his own office.
Outside the office, Michael is involved in two Houston area Home Owners Associations and with the Greater Houston Builders Association. Much of his business comes from his relationships with Builders. There is little time outside of business for personal hobbies, but Michael indulges in photography and travel when not working. “I don’t look at real estate as work,” he concludes. “It’s fun. It’s my passion.”
